REBATES

If you made donations, paid school fees (not tertiary), paid a housekeeper or childcare anytime over the past 4 years you are entitled to receive a rebate on your taxes*. There is also a special rebate if you have received redundancy pay since 1 December 2006. Some people have unclaimed monies which the IRD is holding on their behalf.

If you have not yet made a claim on past donations, housekeeper, school fees and childcare, now is the time to do so as rebates can only be claimed back up to four years, making any payments prior to 1st April 2004 lost. Even if you only have a small amount of receipts for the above items, a claim is definitely worthwhile.

For example:

Peter's church tithes were over $1,890 each year for the past four years to 31 March 2008. He has not claimed any rebates, so he would now be owed total rebates of $2,520.

An added bonus if you are married (or de facto) where you have paid more than the maximum amount, your partner can claim the balance (or vice versa). That would increase the donation rebate to $1260 for Peter and his wife in the above example.

Recapture Refunds has a 15% fee that is deducted from rebates.

Apply now and attach your receipts.

You can claim a rebate for donations, including school fees (not tertiary), if you donated $5
or more anytime over the past four years and
have the receipt.

If you no longer have the receipt, you can usually request a replacement one from the charity/school. Not all school fees are
claimable – contact us for details.

Recent tax law change means individuals can claim 1/3 rebate on their donations made from
1st April 2008, now up to the amount of their taxable income.

Prior to 31 March 2008 the 1/3 rebates were limited to donations totalling $1890. Any donations made over that amount were not eligible for a rebate.

of these changes.

You can also claim rebates on housekeeper and childcare costs up to $940pa each over the past four years if you have the receipts.

Housekeeper payments can be claimed if you or your partner were disabled or physically unable to do housework. You can claim 1/3 of all payments up to $940pa.

Childcare payments can be claimed if: you were a single parent; you and your partner are together and you both received salary or wages with PAYE deducted; or you or your partner were disabled or physically unable to care for your child.

If you no longer have the receipt, you can request a replacement one from your housekeeper or child carer – they are required to keep your records for 7 years.

There is also a new rebate on redundancy payments received since 1st December 2006 paying up to $3,600. You will get back 6 cents in every dollar of redundancy you received (before tax).

You need to provide us with a copy of the redundancy letter from your employer with details of the date and amount of redundancy that was paid.

If you received a redundancy payout prior to 1 December 2006, you are probably still entitled to a refund if it was in the past 5 years. Click here to learn more about refunds…

New Donation Rules Example:

Jane donates $9,000 to various charities and other non-profit organisations, including her local church. Her taxable income for the 2009 year (1 April 2008 - 31 March 2009) is $66,000.

In the past Jane could only claim a maximum of $630. With the removal of the threshold Jane will now receive $3,000, a gain of $2,370! However if Jane won Lotto and gave $120,000 to charitable organizations, she could only claim $22,000 (33 1/3% of her taxable income), not $40,000 (33 1/3% of her donation).
